History: Panforte originated as a sweet prepared for festive or religious occasions. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when spices like pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg were imported from the East and combined with honey and dried fruits, both plentiful in Tuscany. The “Margherita” version, named in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, is said to have been created by a local pastry chef during her 1879 visit to Siena.
